Waxed beans, and Lima Beans ~ too dry and mushy tasting.

Grilled in the summer, roasted in the fall & winter.

Love it!!

Shoelace, and sweet potato whenever possible.

Mixed berries or apple

Yup, mostly of them.

Liam's walking!! Not all the time but more and more, and so proud of himself!!!
And in the 'when it rains, it pour category' just as we are adjusting to my new work schedule we are simultaneous repairing some water damage from a roof leak, which has three rooms in total disarray (well four if you count the dining room which where a ton of stuff got moved)!
Will try and get a picture post together soon, but so far I'm liking the changes we've made. An accent wall in our office, and we had to choose a new border for the family room due to the old one being discontinued.
We are currently paused as we wait for some stuff for the bathroom to come in, and I'm enjoying not having workmen (nice as they have been) in my house everyday.
2-3 inches of snow is wonderful, enough to allow for making snowballs and snow angels yet not too troublesome from the whole shoveling, digging out perspective.
The positive power of bloggers/commenters to keep the record straight!!
When everyone is a little tired and out-of-sorts cause Daddy has been working and away a lot, watching Little Bear can be a lovely way to start an otherwise grey and rainy day.

Of Two Minds

This month I'm returning to the workplace for the first time since Liam was born and to say I am of divided mind would be a definite understatement:

One part of me, the professional part, is so excited about this wonderful opportunity to return to teaching, I truly enjoy it ~ sharing my experience and knowledge base, spending time with nurses as they begin their careers, and luckily I have been told that I have a talent for it. This job is also a nice career jump as it has me going from teaching for a hospital school to being adjunct clinical faculty at a university.

Another part, the personal part, happy to focus wholly on my vocation as wife and mother somewhat resents having to return to work. It is very apparent that my charism is caring and so perhaps that is why directing that energy and skill set towards my family and friends I have not much missed being in the workplace. Part of that frustration is the fact that the job requires weekend time, key family time given my husband's hours. This of course means less time the kids will be with a sitter, but I'm sure going to miss our Sunday morning Dunkin tradition this semester. The rest of the frustration lies in how glad some friends and family are now that I will again, as one said, "be using my brain". Ha, believe me ~ keeping up with growing, dynamic, curious children I've been using my brain plenty!!

Reality: The medical & healthcare field changes at a pace which would not allow me to leave for 5-7 years and return without in some way maintaining my skills ~ and this job is most likely a wonderful opportunity to keep a foothold for the future in my profession.

But I'm of two minds.

Quick Takes #98

The "why's" who have previously been a polite guest occasionally seeking my attention has in the last couple of weeks become very insistent, persistent and on occasion loud. Hoping its stay with us is coming to an end soon.
Still have not decide on my word for the year (nothing seems quite right yet) have really enjoyed read posts such as this, this and this.
Our lovely host's Saint Selector selected St. Louis for me. Don't know much about him despite having been confirmed in a parish bearing his name. When I then tried again with the intention of my children and my parenting St. Therese de Lisieux came up, she I know.
Our family room needs to be repainted due to water damage from a roof leak and our contractor just told me that he can't match the border and to select a new one. I'm trying to view this a chance for a nice change ~ but I really like border. Can't decide whether to look for something close or make a clean break.
Happy Epiphany! Due to C.'s schedule King's Cake will most likely wait for the weekend. Another tradition I know get to share with my littles.
The answer to the question "Will Liam walk by Christmas/New Years?" is no, but given the interest he is now showing in being up on his feet and with only one of our hands for support, I'm thinking any day now.
Plans for the weekend: Putting the Christmas boxes back in the shed and trying to restore some order before the construction craziness starts. Have a good one!

A repost from Advent '10

As a child I loved to try and count how often I would hear my name or a variation of it during mass, I always lost count somewhere along the way, usually during the homily.

Now as an adult I have an even greater appreciation. It feels so right and fitting during this season of reflection and prayerful anticipation to focus on the happier aspects of this time of year. When preparing for a big test; it takes hard work and study ~ but ideally it includes taking a break from the intense focus and having some fun ~ more importantly remembering why I'm studying so hard.

Focusing on improving the place within our homes and hearts where we invite Christ to live is a good and worthy goal, but for today let us lighten the purple with some Christmas white and rejoice in the idea of the gift long ago given and that he desires with be with us wherever we are on the journey if we but invite him.

Wondering Wednesday: First Dance

During Advent one of my favorite things to listen to in the car is We Come Dancing; which include such Advent favorites as Cherry Tree Carol and O Come, O Come Emmanuel

and Covenant Hymn which was the song we selected for our first dance at our wedding.

It speaks of the promises we were making to each other as inspired by those made by Christ to her church.

(We had the DJ stop after the third verse ~ we are both introverts so 3 minutes of dancing with everyone watching us was enough, plus we wondered if the death verse might freak out some people).

Quick Takes #97

Happy December! Happy Advent! There is so much to do, gifts, cards, and cleaning but I can't help loving this time of year. At 3 years old I'm hoping that Lisbeth can begin to take hold of the special meaning of this time of year.
Liam gives hugs ~ and big wide open kisses!
When someone asked Lisbeth this week what she had for Thanksgiving; she recounted "Chicken, oranges, apples, and marshmallows" ~ in other words her thanksgiving feast at nursery school. Clearly the one she shared with us was not as memorable.
Liam is now starting to stand independently and betting has begun on if he will be walking by Christmas/New Year. Given his interesting personality of being very laid-back and stubborn at the same time ~ I'm in the 'no' group!
Am enjoying rereading the Advent book I review at a more pensive pace. Now just some time to check out the wonderful suggestions in these children-focused books I picked up for the kids.
Really did enjoy unseasonably warm Thanksgiving, made all the raking and kid chasing more pleasant. That said, am also very pleased that there is a nip in the air and need to bundle up as we head out on our early evening walks to see whose has lights up.

No Pony November: Wrap-up!

With just a few hours left in the month and feeling confident that I will survive the day without a pony tail; I thought I would share a few thoughts.

Firstly ~ my thanks to Elizabeth for sponsoring this challenge, it was a funny way to remember and make an effort with myself and my appearance.

Overall no major new styles, having discovered I'm just not coordinated enough for the multiple bobby pin up-styles especially in the time I normally have before little ones are pulling at my hands. But did pick-up a couple new fabric headbands which will hopefully make a more regular appearance. This challenge was also a great incentive to get back in the habit of braiding my hair, which only really only takes a minute or two longer than the traditional pony tail.

So while the simple pony tail will likely make its appearance again, hopefully far less often.

Rediscover Advent: A book review

St. Anthony Messenger Press

Rediscover Advent, the devotional by Matthew Kelly, provides a multi layered approach to the readings of Advent. With reflections taken largely from his earlier book Rediscover Catholicism each day have the citations for the readings of the day, a reflection, a meditation with guiding questions and a prayer ~ while the reflection and meditation change daily the prayer is the same for the week providing a nice continuity. Theme for Week 1. is Hope, Week 2. Peace, Week 3. Joy, and finally Week 4. Love.

While the readings for each day are provided and you are encouraged to read them, a pertinent quote for each day is provided from the readings if you don't have the time. The readings and reflections would likely take one 10 - 20 minutes a day depending on whether you read the readings or not. One area of puzzlement of the book is that while the citations for the readings of all three cycles are given for the Sunday readings, only one set of citations is provided for the daily readings and I believe there are two cycles.

For purposes of this review I read the book quickly ( several reflections at a time), but thinks the daily format would work very well for an individual or a family seeking a structured approach to prayer this advent which include the readings. I like the weekly themes and the possible connection with the Advent liturgies; for example week three's theme of joy starting on Gaudete Sunday. I found the reflections interesting and very appropriate which is a little surprising coming from another book, and good food for thought in the meditation questions. I definitely plan on rereading the book this Advent at a more pensive pace.

Gratitude and Freedoms

So often the modern Thanksgiving is depicted with Norman Rockwell's picture "Freedom from Want", and while I am certainly very grateful for all the wonderful food I get to enjoy and that adequate food and water is not a worry in my life or my families; as I think about all that I am thankful for it is the other freedoms which speak even louder to me.

The Freedom to Worship publicly and without fear of recrimination. While everyone may not agree with me and some may be rude about it, I go to Mass without worrying that someone might see me, and I can purchase books about my beliefs, even blog about them.

Freedom from Fear: While fear is not completely absent from my life (don't really think that is possible), as I tuck my children in at night I don't worry about bombs falling, that the water I cook and feed my family with might be contaminated, or any of the other worries of those who live in war zones live with.

So as I count my blessings this week I seek to also remember the freedoms I enjoy!

A month ago I had the great and wonderful pleasure of meeting Rebecca of The Road Home, she very graciously stayed in the area for dinner with my family after her conference ended. I unfortunately forgot my camera, though luckily Rebecca did have hers.

However she has now experienced the frustration of misplacing her memory card reader and the worse luck of having her car burglarized and camera stolen ~ but we are undaunted by whatever force does not want evidence of blogger meet-ups shown. Forgive the quality of my phone camera pictures and please take my word for the fact that Rebecca is gorgeous and Liam was very happy to meet/play with her.

Quick Take 96: Week in Review

1. Halloween was a fun and festive time, both monkeys went trick-or-treating with the older delivering her lines beautifully and at about half the houses remembering without prompting to say thank you, and the younger tolerating not only wearing a costume but being strolled around the neighborhood wearing it.

2. Don't even want to discuss snow in October other than to hope all those still without power ~ have it restored very soon. Joking aside, the half inch we got simply proved fun for the 3 yo, bemusing for the 1 yo, and useful reminder to their mom that snow boots needed to be ordered.

3. We enjoyed lovely weather more representing Autumn the rest of the week and so on a couple afternoons indulged in the highly traditional activity of raking the falling leaves into a large pile and than jumping into said pile before relocating into leaf bags.

4. After her time in front of the camera, Lisbeth insisted on some time behind the camera ~ fair enough, fair enough.

5. As you can maybe tell from the above picture; so far so'kay with the No Pony Challenge hosted by That Married Couple. Four days in and so far I have not gotten really creative yet but am excited to try out some styling and check out some of the many ideas offered in this post.

6. Given the general craziness of early morning and that she had attended Mass the day before for All Saints I opted not to go with C. when he went before work on All Souls ~ right decision, but I'm glad he was able to go and look forward to a time when attending a daily mass won't be quite so challenging.

7. Was not able to attend my 20th high school reunion, but through the FB page organizing that a former friend is now a priest ~ so 'friended' on FB and am now enjoying his pictures from the Holy Land. Sometime life is so random and so fun.

Quick takes 95: Style edition

Having enjoyed the wonderful posts on personal style by Elizabeth of That Married Couple and Lauren of Magnify the Lord ~ and being a happy follower of Betty Beguiles for many months ~ I thought it was time I took a look at my closet.
Given that in the past four years there has been pregnancies, nursing time, and the loss of about thirty pounds this inventory is long overdue ~ and so inspired by those who have inspired me (like my logic) I promise to get rid of what does not fit or does not flatter. As 'me time' is limited this will most likely take a couple of weeks but I figured the change of seasons will help as I will be looking at much of what I own in the semi-annual wardrobe shift.
Also given that 'me time' is elusive there is not a lot of time in the morning for outfit selection so paring down and building a closet of pieces that work for me and work together really appeals ~ and while definitely still an evolving concept I have, thanks to my reading, a sense of the image as full-time mom, part-time nursing instructor, and all the time me; I want to convey to the world.
Footwear: I have of late definitely settled into a uniform of ease and functionality as a mom with a nursling and an active toddler but one area where I've enjoyed having some fun is footwear. I had great luck this summer finding a couple pairs of cute flats ~ and am now hoping to replicate that same style boost from two new pairs of boots ~ one from the lovely Sarah of Fumbling toward Grace, and one I picked up this week.

5. Skirts: One day earlier this summer I suggested a dress to Lisbeth and she declined pointing out that we were not going to church ~ and I explained that we could wear skirts and dresses even on non-church days, but also know that if I wanted her to really believe me I would have to model that ~ and besides I love skirts and have picked up a couple heavier weight ones for autumn and winter.

6. Reality: I'm terrible at purging and most days you will most likely find me in jeans and my black clogs (and maybe even a hoodie) but I am so excited and inspired about all that I'm learning about developing a personal style

7. Yup that's me ~ a mom with a bit of style!

Heavy getting lighter all the time now that I also have to pack for kids

Trail Mix of the chocolate and fruit variety

Always!!

If we are going to be there for more than a couple days ~ drive so I can get around otherwise fly so that I don't use vacation time just getting there and back.

Anytime!! Seriously I love travel!

With family at the beach

I think we have made the move totally to table food with Liam, I offered purred stuff twice this week (trying to finish it up) and he would take two bites at best. Current faves include: eggs, noodles, cucumbers and of course frites

I tried a 'roasted' chicken recipe this week in the crock pot, and it worked well. I see fried rice and quesadillas in our future!!

Honeymoon Memories

We married at the end of December, and my future husband not fond of tropical heat pushed for us to go somewhere 'wintery' ~ I agreed with two caveats that when we came in from the cold it would be to a fireplace and hot tub. After working on finding a place for awhile he came back to say that it was going to have to be an either/or choice ~ I chose the fireplace knowing we would enjoy that more.

   And so on January 1st having visited my father and his grandmother (both unable to attend the wedding due to health issues) and spending New Year's Eve with his family we headed out to drive across Maine and New Brunswick to our ultimate destination: Prince Edward's Island

   My new husband had actually done a wonderful job choosing our lodgings; it was a charming older hotel at the edge of Charlottetown (the capital) which allowed us easy walking to the shops and eateries of the old part of town and easy access to get out of town by car and explore the rest of the island. Unfortunately nine years ago most of the more touristy places closed in the winter so we were unable to visit the home of L.M Montgomery now a museum celebrating her and her most famous character Anne of Green Gable but we were able to go to Cavendish beach and walk some of the dunes whose descriptions I had read and re-read so often since discovering the series at 12.

On the one or two more snowy days we stayed in town walking, window shopping, and enjoying yummy seafood ~ as it should be ~ to date the BEST PEI mussels I have ever had was on PEI!!
Over all it was a wonderful 5 days together exploring and/or doing nothing. BTW the fireplace turned out to be more comedy than romance: it being the fakest looking gas fireplace we had (or have) ever seen!!

Blessed John Henry Newman ~ Feast Day

As I have written previously being involved at my university's Newman Center had a great and wonderful impact on my life and faith journey (not the least of which ~ it is where I met my husband) up to and including this weekend when C.and I presented at a Pre-Cana Day hosted at the Center. The following quote was on a plaque given me at graduation:

“God has created me to do Him some definite service. He has committed some work to me which He has not committed to another. I have my mission. I may never know it in this life, but I shall be told it in the next. I am a link in a chain, a bond of connection between persons.
He has not created me for naught. I shall do good; I shall do His work.
I shall be an angel of peace, a preacher of truth in my own place,
while not intending it if I do but keep His commandments.
Therefore, I will trust Him, whatever I am, I can never be thrown away. If I am in sickness, my sickness may serve Him, in perplexity, my perplexity may serve Him. If I am in sorrow, my sorrow may serve Him. He does nothing in vain. He knows what He is about. He may take away my friends. He may throw me among strangers. He may make me feel desolate, make my spirits sink, hide my future from me. Still, He knows what He is about.”

Quick Takes # 93: Rain Drops on Roses version

I'm sick, not bad sick just annoying head cold sick so please allow as find some positives to focus on.
I am now consistently only changing dirty diapers for one little person in the house. There is still the occasional wet pull-up after naps and nights, but solid wonderful progress
'Mama' is being heard more often and increasingly selectively aimed at me!!
Lisbeth is really enjoying her school, and I'm enjoying the evening concerts of new songs learned.

Summer Prayer Buddy Reveal

I had the pleasure of praying for M of A Maiden's Tale during the Summer session of Prayer Buddies. It was a honor to prayer for her and her family.

I prayed for M.'s intention during my morning and evening offerings. I also prayed before the Blessed Sacrament that she would know Christ's love and peace deep within her heart.

I was not able to view her blog (it's private), and at first it was a little disconcerting but I came to see the opportunity ~ to focus on the hidden crosses in peoples lives. That in a sense anyone I meet could be struggling with health or financial worries; the grumpy person in the grocery store, the unsmiling clerk at the bank. I hope M. felt some blessing or grace from my prayers ~ I know my heart was changed.

My thanks to Marie of Joy Beyond the Cross and Mrs Henderson of Still Standing for arranging this wonderful opportunity!

Watching a certain 1 year old destroying his 'Elmo' cupcake. Overall I think his birthday celebrations went well, it was low-key, fun and in no way freaked out our somewhat timid little one.

Lisbeth's first day of nursery school, slightly bumpy start as Daddy was out of town and her favorite backpack was a no go due to school rules ~ but she pulled it together and had a great day.

A visit from G-ma usually means a visit from her wonderful dog and this visit was no difference. The adults got to keep their reflexes in shape trying to keep Liam out of the dog's bowl of water.

Began a Water Babies class with Liam; he loves it and I'm loving hold and splashing around with him.

Lisbeth is currently really into puzzles. So much fun to sit with her and do a puzzle ~ and over the course of the month watch her come to understand the concept of finding the corner pieces, which pieces go on the outside, etc.

Last weekend we went to a Creperie for dinner with friends and while I was ordering Lisbeth's crepe I asked for 'light' chocolate in the hopes of minimizing the mess as she is very definite about feeding herself. Overhearing me, she proclaimed "But I like dark chocolate!" I assured her that the crepe would contain dark chocolate and all was well.

The Mass in Scripture: a review

In The Mass in Scripture, the author, Stephen Binz, used the traditional five steps of lectio divina
(listening~ a scriptural passage, understanding~ explanation of background history to help put the passage in context, reflecting ~ questions about how what was just discussed might change the experience of that part of the Mass, praying ~ a prayer is given with suggestions for how to continue in your own words, and finally acting ~ ways to apply the lesson in your daily life) to explain the scriptural influences for the format and prayers of the Mass.

The lessons are interesting, the pace is good, by using responses from the new missal the book gave me a preview of changes coming this Advent. Building well on themes of covenant, sacrifice, and celebration from the Old and New Testaments, the author does a good job of explaining why the Eucharist is both "a sacrifice and a banquet", giving me a better appreciation for why we speak of both offering the mass and celebrating together. It can easily be done as a group study; in addition to the reflection questions at the end of each section there are discussion suggestions for use in a group. I am curious what other topics are offered in the Lectio Divina series, and would recommend this one to anyone interested either in this type of bible study or in some of the scriptural roots in our celebration of the Mass.

Quick Takes # 90

1. Maine was wonderful; great weather, good food and enjoyable time with family. Pleasures included time at the pool, ocean, and making s'mores ~ one of which was offered to Liam for a taste test.

2. Given that we were there and not here, we did miss the earthquake. Reports from family were interesting and somewhat amusing; for example that shaking was initially blamed on my nephew by my mom until he pointed out IT WAS AN EARTHQUAKE!

3. This being an interesting week weather-wise we did cut our vacation short to avoid traveling during the worst of the hurricane. We largely succeeded in that we arrived home ten minutes before we lost power!

4. Not anticipating a storm we had done the usual pre-vacation eat down the fridge and so were in need of some food. Upside ~ less food went bad, Downside ~ husband driving in tropical storm winds in search of an open store while I try and convince our 3 year old that despite the noise outside and the fun of walking around our house with flashlights she really does want to go to bed.

5. No power for 48 hours ~ creative menu planning, gratitude for battery powered entertainment options, and intensive education on candle safety with a certain little girl.

6. If it is September then I'm mom to a nearly one year old. How? I remember this phenomena with Lisbeth, the newborn period a tiring blur, the search for a routine and the new normal, and suddenly a year has gone by.

Re-entry Woes

Usually getting settled in after vacation is a little bumpy; this time it was more like a crash landing. What with leaving early to try and make it home before the worst of the storm and then losing power for 48 hours.
But are now up and running again and will hopefully be back soon with tales of swimming and s'mores, but am now off to restock my fridge.

Quick Take #89 ~ Apps

Kids apps which have now been truly road tested ( N.C. And Maine) and are kid tested/mom approved in our house.

1. Find them all ~ a farm game where one is prompted to find various animals in their happiest habitats. Level 1 is daytime allowing you to see and hear the animal, Level 2 is night where sound becomes your major asset. There is also a puzzle element once you have found all the animals.

2. Another Animal app ~ Photo touch Farm Animals has you identifying the requested animal, starting with three pictured ~ the number increases the more you get correct. Lisbeth started playing already knowing the names of many farm animals and through the game has learned the name for their young such as calf and foal.

3. Following off of that we discovered Photo touch Food Festival ~ which has she learning to identify many different fruits and vegetables; and perhaps being more inclined to try having met them in a new and different way.

4.My play house includes four rooms in which mom, dad and three kids live and play. Many great interactive features: in the living room you can change the CD, in the kitchen you can make and eat breakfast and then in the bathroom brush your teeth.

5. Jigsaw A-Z ~ 16 piece puzzles of words starting with each letter of the alphabet, a doable challenge for her and with 64 options, good exposure to the different sounds letters make.

6. Itsy Bitsy Spider is an interactive rendition of the song with many creatures taking part and great sound effects!

(And one for Mom)
7. Prayers app: A wonderful resource with prayers for throughout the day and the liturgical year. I appreciate that so many different saints writings are featured. Offered by the same company that has a Divine Office app.

1. Tomorrow my baby is 11 months, too close to a year. Deny or weep?

2. No denying he is mobile. The new twist of childproofing this time around ~ all of his big sister's little toys.

3. Peach cobbler ~ Yum! So glad I had the forethought to marry someone who likes to bake.

4. This week's Stock Market roller coaster like behavior makes me grateful I am largely on the sidelines. My sympathies to those of you who are not.

5. Speaking of sidelines ~ here comes football. Not watching yet, but does soften the blow of summer ending.

Small Successes ~ August 11th

1. I have for some time wanted to more organized and routine about praying, admired and been impressed by those who on a regular basis pray the Divine Office. I have asked for tips from my husband and others on how to start, read posts about it, and priced books and apps...
And then decided that is the deep end and I need to ease in ~ and so thanks to the Divine Office Prayer app ~ am this week praying a morning and evening prayer.

2. Having gotten tips from Parenting with Grace (thoughts and reflections about someday) have been consistently saying grace with Lisbeth before meals and bedtime for about a month now.

3. Over half-way through the devotional I'm to review

Quick Takes #87

1. Bye bye Borders ~ Going to miss you, browsing on a computer is not the same somehow.

2. Vacation recovery continues, but definitely well worth it. Recaps found here and here.

3 18-Year Review Shows Overwhelming Evidence of High-Quality Care of Certified Nurse-Midwives ~ When you are part it you know the value ~ but outside proof is always a nice validation.

4. While on vacation, Liam initially had some relatives baffled as to how he was moving until they came to fully appreciate 'The Butt Scoot'. He has mastered moving himself in a seated position by pushing his feet into the floor and scooting forward.

5. However I think this was driving my physical therapist of a mom a little crazy given how often she would lay him on his stomach: He is now creeping in a more traditional manner

6. Squirrels keep eating all my tomatoes. A friend suggested chicken wire, any other suggestions?

7. Going peach picking this weekend ~ any favorite peach recipes??

Outer Banks Week: Part 2

Continuing on from Part 1:

Wednesday: After spending some time in the pool, we headed to the nearby lighthouse: Currituck Light with one of our nephews, everyone climbed well (except Liam who seemed to enjoy the ride in the Bjorn). Home for lunch and naps then a game of mini - golf, Lisbeth's first and some dip dots ice cream, more pool time, and after the kids were tucked in some hot tub time with my sisters!!

Thursday: BEACH: as in spend the morning, jumped some waves, watched the bigger cousins body surf and use their boogie boards ~ we even briefly got Lisbeth in on the wave action and Liam continued to enjoy water, reading out on the deck with the kids napped and pool

time to round out the day.

Friday: Pool time in the morning, a walk by myself during the kids naptime, and many attempts to get all the cousins looking & smiling for a picture; first at the house and then on the beach. Followed by the building of a few more sand castles, the jumping of a few more waves and then back to the house to enjoy a final seafood dinner wonderfully prepared by one of my brother-in-laws and his dad.

Saturday: Packing, loading, hugs & good-byes, last chance shopping, Dunkin breakfast and headed out. Till next time..

A big mix right now, moving towards all plastic with some wood for heavy stuff

OBX week in review: Part 1

As some of you may have noticed this spot was rather quiet last week ~ well the reason ~ was I (and some of my favorite people) was enjoying some vacation/family time on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. A get-a-way we have now manage q-3 years three times now.

Saturday: Driving: Which all things considered went well ~ we got a later start then I had been hoping, but otherwise the kids dealt with the various beach traffic slow downs well. Thanks in part to the occasional stop to eat and run around and Mommy's iPad. Upon arrival Lisbeth quickly joined in on the cousins antics while Liam decided to take in the new surrounds and many people from the safety of Mommy's or Daddy's shoulder.

Sunday: Started with breakfast and exploring the house a bit in daylight, checking out the views from the decks and then off to Mass. During big family vacation we divided up the cooking with each smaller family taking the dinner duty one night and tonight was our night so once the kids were napping, some shopping and prep happened. A glimpse of the beach and some pool-time completed the afternoon free time ~ then preparing the tasty dinner enjoyed by all.

Monday: Nice walk on the beach in the morning introducing Lisbeth to the pleasures of collecting shells and Liam to sand & sea ~ kid approved, pool in the afternoon ~ nothing complicated, much fun! Another very tasty dinner, this one prepared by a sister's father-in-law and then some cocktail time with my sisters once the kids were tucked-in.

Tuesday: An early morning which did allow the chance to watch the sunrise over the ocean. Later in the afternoon pool time again with Lisbeth getting more confident trusting her floating suit and Liam with standing and splashing in the 'baby' pool, then some time browsing the local shops including some playground time and ice cream.

Like much of the country it was hot here this week ~ like triple digit even in the shade hot, like so glad I found this link full of suggestions:

Faith & Family Live! : Iced Coffee

2. Have not yet had the chance to try any of the recipes out yet, but will mostly likely very soon have coffee ice cubes cool in my freezer.

3. Announcement regarding new Archbishop made with the usual amount of leaking and the mainstream press only occasionally misrepresenting that Cardinal Rigali was stepping down due to grand jury issues as oppose to retiring due to age.

4. Another favorite link from the week is a short story by an author, Paige, I happen to know from the blog-o-sphere whose first book I reviewed here. Love the message of storing up memories of the simple everyday moments of loving our kids at all their various ages and stages.

5. For example last evening when Lisbeth being her typical toddler self declined to eat her mac&cheese, Liam being the adventurous new eater (and good brother) ate them instead.

NAMED ARCHBISHOP OF PHILADELPHIA

Cardinal Justin Rigali will hold a news conference this morning to announce that Pope Benedict XVI has named Archbishop Charles J. Chaput O.F.M., Cap. as the 13th Bishop and 9th Archbishop of Philadelphia. Archbishop Chaput will be Installed on Thursday, September 8, 2011, the feast of the birth of the Blessed Virgin Mary, in the Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul at 2:00 p.m. The Holy Father has also appointed Cardinal Rigali as Apostolic Administrator with all of the responsibilities of Archbishop until the Installation of Archbishop Chaput.

Archbishop Chaput, who is 66, is a member of the Order of Friars Minor, Capuchin. He was ordained a priest in 1970 and became a bishop at the age of 43. At that time he became the Bishop of Rapid City, South Dakota. Since 1997 he has served as Archbishop of Denver. A member of the Prairie Band Potowatami Tribe, Archbishop Chaput is the second Native American to be ordained a Bishop in the United States and the first Native American Archbishop.

May God grant him the wisdom, and humility to heal the wounds and guide us forward.

Quick Takes #85

Wonderful visit with my brother last week as he paused on his thru-hike of the Appalachian trail. Having already done it once, this time he quote him ~ he is less worried about logistics and keeping to a schedule, and having fun taking his time.
As usual matters of faith came up, were gently debated and a plot was hatched for a mini book club after his hike with us both reading C.S Lewis Screwtape Letters and Mark Twain's Letters from the Earth and then exchanging thoughts and ideas.
I will not be headed out to see the final Potter movie (have not been in a theatre in about three years) but hopes everyone who is has a blast! I did very much enjoy the book and look forward to catching it on DVD someday.
Not many responses to my Wondering Wednesday ~ is everyone as confused as me or am I just behind and changing the order of sacraments makes sense to everyone but me?
What is it about July that gets people feeling all independent: Canada ~ July 1st, USA ~ July 4th, France ~ July 14th, Belgium ~ July 21st??

Wondering Wednesday: Order of Sacraments

Reading Bishop Aquila article has me thinking about the order of sacraments and when one is ready to receive. I understand what the article is saying about receiving the graces of the sacrament of Confirmation ~ but what of the commitment. At their confirmation the recipient states that they "believe and profess all that of the Catholic Church believes, teaches and proclaims to be revealed by God". I worry that is a lot to ask of an eight year old who is just entering the age of reason.

Reconciliation -sure: Right/wrong, asking forgiveness and making amends.

First Eucharist - probably: joining the community at the table, welcoming Christ into your body, your heart, your life. Of course my understanding of trans-substantiation has grown as I have matured ~ so perhaps that is the sacrament to receive in young adulthood with Confirmation coming earlier.

Disclaimer: I loved my Confirmation prep ~ I had wonderful teachers (a married couple) who took us phrase by phrase through the Apostles Creed and spoke with love and devotion of full membership in the Catholic Church so that at my Confirmation as I received the last of the Sacraments of Initiation and professed the creed I was so happy and proud to claim this Church as my home.

Can an eight year old take hold of that? I wonder?

Quick Takes #84~ Favorite Black&White Movies

Letting my mind wander as I rocked a tired teething boy I began thinking of favorite movies and then thought to focus on older ones; so in no particular order except #1 my all-time favorite.

1. The Philadelphia Story ~ Does it really get any better than Katharine Hepburn, Cary Grant and Jimmy Stewart all at their best as they fight and flirt ~ personally I don't think so.

2. Roman Holiday ~ Audrey Hepburn in her first film and Gregory Peck fall in love and share a

day in Rome.

3. Gentleman's Agreement ~ Gregory Peck is amazing as a journalist who pretends to be

Jewish to expose anti-semitism. The movie is tough, touching and funny. I especially like

Celeste Holm's performance.

4. The Catered Affair ~ Bette Davis and Ernest Borgnine are amazing as an older couple trying to give their daughter a nice wedding and discern the state of their marriage as the nest

empties.

5. Lilies of the Field ~ Sidney Poitler plays a wanderer who stops because his car is overheating

and ends up helping build a church. Beautifully shot and as funny as heartwarming.

6. It's A Wonderful Life ~ Jimmy Stewart as a hard-working dreamer who shows how very

important a life well lived can be. A must watch every Advent/Christmas!

7. Woman of the Year ~ Katharine Hepburn and Spencer Tracey's first movie together where

love at first sight gives way to figuring out the day to day details of building a life together.

1 Congratulations to Jen and her husband on the birth of their new daughter!

2. Discreet nursing is made difficult when your nursling wants to play peek-a-boo with the cover.

3. Style icon: I have been thinking about this idea since reading about the concept on our host site and here ~ perhaps Mary Tyler Moore as Laura Petrie ~ nice tops, capri and cute shoes.

4. However given that I am living outside of Philadelphia, raising kids ~ and am of that uncertain age ~ perhaps Mel Harris as Hope would be the better fit. I just don't think of the fashions of that show as iconic.

5. Letter writing sessions with Lisbeth continue with much silliness, but as she spontaneously started writing 'H' this week, maybe some learning is happening.

6. Favorite summer moment of the week ~ sitting on the front step sharing a popsicle. Not sure who enjoyed more the happy toddler or the teething baby!

7. Weekend plans ~ family time, grass cutting and perhaps some strawberry picking.

The pleasure of stolen moments

With the nap situation improving, in that both the little people I share my days with often consenting to nap at the same time, and with the addition of a nice table & umbrella under which to enjoy a sunny summer afternoon ~ I have again on a daily basis gleefully got my nose in a book or two (well actually 3).

I love reading and it is my norm to have several books going; at the moment

Fiction-wise: Persuasion by Jane Austen ~ an Austen I've never read and had my curiousity peaked by how it was described in the film The Jane Austen Book Club

Non-fiction wise: We Two by Gillian Gill ~ a telling of the courtship and marriage of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert of England

Spiritual wise: Parenting with Grace by Gregory & Lisa Popcak ~ a Catholic parenting guide that I'm reading inspired by Sarah of Fumbling toward Grace's post about vocation.

Any suggestions for what should come next?

40 Weeks ~ a review

40 weeks is the story told in journal style about a young mother, Anna, processing and healing from the loss of her first child to a miscarriage as she plans and anticipates the coming of her second. Touching also on themes of marriage, aging, and celebrating family and friends throughout the life cycle.
40 weeks is a lovely, lovely read with many wonderful gems of wisdom to ponder and explore. How does a young couple support and love each other through loss and heartache? How do we mourn someone we have barely met? How do we best love and support an older person dealing with the limitations of disease and aging? For example the title refers to the title on the journal that "Jack" gives "Anna" knowing that in part, his wife would need to write her way through her grief.
These and others questions are approached with humor and tenderness by the author Paige Beselt a blogger I began exchanging emails with four years ago during my first and her eighth pregnancy ( she and her husband are raising seven and two await her in heaven). The book is well paced, in that important themes regarding life and death are given their due but the storyline continually moves us forward, and tender teasing between the couple offers a light note to balance against the deeper reflections in the book. It was a pleasure to read this book and an honor to review it.

1.Sitting up so very well now and starting to want to stand-up

2. Finds his sister hilarious

3. Beginning to wave and play peek-a-boo

4. Reaches for whatever he can reach, especially food ~ table food wise: faves are pickles and bread crust in addition to the yogurt melts and the puffs.

5. Still 6 teeth, but the 7th are just below the surface.

6. Gradually becoming a better sleeper ~ and the plan is to move to the crib soon.

7. Still not using sounds for words but starting to find his voice to shreek & shout.

8. LOVES HIS DADDY, and practically tries to throw himself in his arms when Dad comes home.

9. Likes to flirt with me by cocking his head to the side and smile. So cute when he lays his head down on the swing tray and grins at me.

As my husband reminded me today is break even day ~ 40 weeks now out in the world.

Happy 9 months Liam!!

Quick Takes 82

1. Late post because this morning saw our house again under siege as we saw finally the end of the repairs to our family room following the hailstorm LAST June. Incidentally there was a hailstorm last night: No Damage!

2. Splash fest: Joint baths are starting to show up as Liam is much more stable sitting-up ~ and I'm think I'm going to start wearing a raincoat (or a bathing suit) ~ but such fun to watch!

3. The current heat wave made it very apparent that summer if not already here is soon to be and so making use of the childcare at our local Y, I have begun working out again. The kids and I are still working out the kinks but bathing suit season here we come.

4. Plants have been planted ~ hopefully vegetables are growing. Having successfully grown tomatoes in a container last year, this year we are progressing to planting in the ground.

5. Favorite moment of the week: While sitting outside Lisbeth's gymnastic class came to realize that Liam was playing peek-a-boo with me. He was lifting a cloth over his face, then dropping it and grinning at me.

6. Graduation season is upon us, friends are completing their degrees, neighbors & second cousins have finished high school ~ Best wishes to them and all in the Class of 2011.

7. Contemplating a road trip this weekend. Whatever yours brings you ~ have a good one.

1. Garden planted, having successfully grown tomatoes in a pot last
year have advanced to plants in the ground.

2. Project Family Dinner going well, for nearly a week now ~ have been sitting at the kitchen table for dinner together and beginning to introduce the concept of saying grace.

3. Meal planned this week with happy low-stress results

Giving Thanks this Thursday for:
time together as a family
farm fresh produce
a cool place to beat the heat
watching a baby learn to wave and creep

1. Goodbye May, and thanks for all the great memories!

2.Was finally able to replace our patio table last weekend Given that the chairs were still in good shape, we opted to get an umbrella for the table. Lunchtime al fresco showed up twice this week.

3. The sprinkler and water table have also been brought out from their winter hibernation in the hopes they will enjoy another summer with us.

4.Extreme Weather continues: Our Prayers for those effected by the tornadoes in Springfield and western Massachusetts

5. Finally catching up on some movies saw The Kings Speech last week, really enjoyed it!! If you too have not yet had the chance ~ put it on your to do list.

6. Have signed Lisbeth for swimming lessons including learning about water safety, we have 2 beach vacations planned both of which include pool times, hoping this will make for a better time for her and her parents.

1. Liam is eight months today ~ babbling more & more and Daddy wins again ~ the first consonant is D, hearing lots of Dadada

3. Still breast-feeding well and despite having three new teeth, the biting situation is not too bad ~ so have now managed to provide 'Momma Milk' for my little who drinks from the faucet as long as I did for the one who insisted that I pumped it and put into a bottle for her

4.First Communion for my niece last week ~ perfect gospel reading of the story of the road to Emmaus (Luke 24: 13-35) ~ may she, our nephew making his this weekend and all of us always "know him in the breaking of the bread"

Holy Week thoughts

As Lent comes to a close I'm taking a few moments to take a wide view and acknowledge what worked and what didn't:

- I did well on my fiction fast, but to tell the truth not much reading of any sort happened.
- Over halfway to the 40 bag goal and motivated to keep going till I reach 40.
- Never made it to Stations of the Cross, was able to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation.

A tougher time this year getting in a Lenten mode; feeling as I though I was journeying through these forty days towards something (a metaphor that has work well for me in the past) but ready or not, for better or worse, tomorrow begins Triduum.

May I have ears to hear, eyes to see, and a heart to take hold.

Quick Takes Vol. #78

Lifting my head up after a couple of tough weeks of illness and traveling to point out some highlights and make sure to document some of the hints of light and laughter amidst the darkness.
Guess who is sitting up all by himself; he also decided a couple days shy of officially being 7 months that rolling is also something he is interested in.

3. Heard from my brother a couple of weeks ago that he would again be walking by: Having been asked by another hiker and having really enjoyed his experience last year my brother is again hiking the Appalachian Trail and will hopefully be stopping for a night or two some time in July.

4. Good weather has allowed for some gardening and introducing a little one to grass on his bare feet.

5. I have had the opportunity to again pick up my prayer journal on a couple of occasions (children napping simultaneously ~ praise) and sit quietly and reflect the graces and mercies which surround me.

6. A certain someone turned 7 months!!

10 Things about Me and My Better Half

1. We met at the Newman Center of the university we were both at; me for undergrad and him for grad school

2. We were friends for about a year before we started dating

3. We dated for eight years before getting engaged

4. He proposed on a day trip to visit the Alamo (we were living in Houston at the time)

5.Two weeks before the wedding a big part of the church ceiling came down, closing the church temporarily

6. So we married in the chapel where we had met ten years before

7. We love the ocean and so went to Prince Edward's Island for our honeymoon despite many people thinking we were crazy ( We got married at the end of December)

8. Four years later we won a trip to Hawaii, that was nice too!

9. We both LOVE ice cream and could eat it every day

10. 18 years together, 8 years married, 2 kids later: his arms = my happy place

Milkshakes and Memories: repost

In the plans for today is getting a milkshake (ideally a frappe, but those are hard to come by outside of New England), preferably coffee. You see my dad passed away March 27, 2004 and when the first anniversary came I was not sure what to do, I did not exactly want to celebrate, but marking the date was definitely in order.

So I got a coffee shake because my dad loved them, and he taught me to also. It felt right and so now every year on his birthday in September and on this day in March I get a milkshake, remember, and raise my glass to my dad.

My dad who loved to read, the ocean, and mountain climbing especially the White's in New Hampshire. Who preferred classical music but also introduced me to The Weavers, Peter, Paul and Mary, and Beyond the Fringe.

So probably I can convince Elisabeth to join me in a milkshake and someday when she is older I will tell her why we are having one on this day and who her grandfather was.

Quick Takes Vol. #77

Happy Feast of the Annunciation: I don't believe it is known what time of day the Angel Gabriel visited Mary with the news of her pregnancy, but in my case both times I discovered in the morning, and in the case of my pregnancy with Liam: after C. had left for work ~ at least for me it gives the day an interesting twist to have something that big that only you know.
The start of solids foods is going well, once he came to understand the whole spoon concept. He has so far enjoyed avocado, squash, cereal with bananas, and currently pears; up next: green peas.
My observance of Lent has not been going as I hoped with less time for reading, prayer and journaling; though it occurred to me that perhaps an important Lenten lesson is to learn to carry the cross how it is given to you ~ especially when not in a way of your choosing.
Small vent: Sweden has apparently not gotten the memo about crib mattress fitting all toddler beds. The bed we got from IKEA is about a foot longer; luckily I had bought the mattress they suggested with the bed as we are moving Liam to the crib, but as I had already bought bedding elsewhere I didn't get bedding when we bought the bed ~ leaving us for a fews day (till I could get back to the store) with a bed with no bedding. Am I the last mom to know about this?
I am happy to report that she has (mostly) successfully been sleeping in her new room now for almost a week. Still need re-arrange the furniture a little, but project New Toddler Room nearly done!
Despite waking to flurries yesterday; with daffodils and forsythia blooming and tulips coming up it is starting to feel like spring around here.
Plans for the weekend: Cleaning & adding to my 40 bags in 40 days goal, and a remembrance of family. Wishing you all a wonderful weekend!
