Quick Takes #194: Musicals Edition

Sharing some of my favorite musicals ~ seven of them actually.

  1. Sound of Music (1965) While I'm glad we own the DVD and I can watch it whenever I want, I will also always cherish the childhood memories of excitement when this movie came on once a year and bedtime was suspended this one night.
  2. Gigi: (1958) When I introduced Charlie to Gigi he couldn't believe we watched it as kids but truly all the sexual inferences went over our heads and the music is wonderful!
  3. Seven Brides for Seven Brothers: (1954) Still remember the first time I saw this movie and fell in love with Jane Powell and how she rides herd on Howard Keel and his six brothers
  4. Mary Poppins (1964) Another childhood favorite that I'm now having some much fun introducing my kids to. This was the first Beta (!!!) tape we owned and my sister's and I probably had it memorized at some point.
  5. Bed-knobs and Broomsticks (1971) Perhaps not technically a musical but definitely an old movie I love to watch with wonderful songs to sing and enjoy.
  6. The King and I:(1956)  Definitely a darker movie than the others on the list and my introduction to the idea that not every movie has a happen ending. The chemistry between Yul Brenner and Deborah Kerr is subtle and substantial and the music beautiful!
  7. Bride and Prejudice (2004) ~ while not an old movie it was my husband's answer when I asked his favorite and since this Bollywood version of Pride and Prejudice is a lot of fun and the musical numbers are wonderful it made the cut.
Please head over to Kelly's for more Quick Takes!!
Link-oberfest question of the week: Favorite blogger discovered thru Quick Takes: really hard for me to remember back but I believe I discovered both Martin Family Moments and House Unseen from Quick Takes.

A lovely reminder

Amidst a lovely weekend I felt something nudging me to a different Mass from usual ~ checking in with the rest of the family we made it work and during the Offertory a wonderful moment of grace: a song I love well sung.  Held back the tears and gave thanks that I heeded the nudging.

Happy Easter!!

Roll Away The Stone – Tom Conry
They have been saying all our plans are empty.
They have been saying “Where is their God now?”
Roll away the stone, see the Glory of God.   Roll away the stone…
They have been saying no one will remember.
They have been saying Power rules the world.
Roll away the stone, see the Glory of God.  Roll away the stone…
They have been saying no one hears the singing.
They have been saying all our strength is gone.
Roll away the stone, see the Glory of God.  Roll away the stone…
They have been saying “All of us are dying.”
They have been saying “All of us are dead.”
Roll away the stone, see the Glory of God.  Roll away the stone…

Happy Easter!!

Quick Takes vol #20

  1. Have begun to get language explosion around here with new words almost every few days so I thought I would work on manners too.  Whenever she would pull on my legs and say 'Up' I would answer 'Up please' and it seems to be working.  The 'please' is not very clear but there is definitely now a word of some sort coming after 'UP'
  2. The weather finally gave us a break this week and a couple days of sun.  Ventured out to the playground and check out a local arboretum which was holding a tree-house exhibit.
  3. Don't think Elisabeth fully appreciated the work that went into constructing the tree-houses we saw however the stairs got raves.  We are very much into stairs right now!
  4. Last date night included a wonderful beef fried rice and watching Mama Mia which I heartily recommend.  Sometimes there is nothing better than a joyous and fun-filled musical.  I'm still humming the tunes almost a week later.
  5. When choosing a spouse there are the big things you look for; compatibility, intelligence, a sense of humor, and feeling mutual respect and attraction.  Then there are the happy surprises!!  Marrying someone who likes to cook definitely has its benefits :-)
  6. Received word this week of two lovely baby girls born to friends of mine, this combined with celebrating this weekend the high school graduation of a cousin (by marriage) I have had the great privilege of knowing since she was two years old has me thinking about the passage of time.  'The Circle Game' is one of my favorite songs and as I get older its bittersweet message rings truer and truer.
  7. This weekend traveling to New Jersey to honor and celebrate with the graduate!
