Ideas and options for books while traveling

   We live about halfway between both of our extended families and have for all of the kids lives ~ which means we are almost always traveling for the holidays. The kids are in general good travelers and I wanted to share some of the books we have found that help them pass the time so well.

  Of late Lisbeth has been big into mazes and these from Usborne are wonderful, interesting and since they get progressively harder she is not likely rush through.   All of the kids enjoy the write and wipe books and Usborne has a nice mix of instructional and fun ones.  The pages wipe easily and the pens provided have lasted well and not dried quickly if the kids don't remember to promptly recap.

  Another great option for us are the magic pens books; the pen last a long time and having just the one pen is easier for Caitlin to keep track of.  The link is to Amazon but of late I've had good luck finding them in the Target dollar bins in some of the kids favorite characters.

Finally another book series we like when traveling are these Melissa and Doug water pen books.  Tough to refill in the car but a great option while visiting since when the pages dry they are reusable and I don't have to worry on which wall or piece of furniture my frustrated artist might be drawing on.

    Usually the night before, not the last minute but kinda

      Heavy getting lighter all the time now that I also have to pack for kids

       Trail Mix of the chocolate and fruit variety


4. Do you take any reading material along?
        Always!!


5. Do you prefer to drive or fly to your vacation destination?
       If we are going to be there for more than a couple days ~ drive so I can get around otherwise fly so that I don't use vacation time just getting there and back.

6. What is your favorite time of the year to take your vacation?
        Anytime!!  Seriously I love travel!

7. Where is your favorite place to vacation?
       With family at the beach

8. You are vacationing in the mountains, what is your favorite thing to do while there?
       Hike

9. You are at the beach for your vacation,  do you like to take it easy on the beach or play all day in the water?
       Wave jumping at the edge
10. While your on vacation do you prefer to eat out every night or cook some of your own meal
          Both, trying out local places some nights and others hanging out at 'home'

Small Successes: May 19th

1. Cut the grass

2. Managed back to back long road trips to VA and MA to celebrate with family as a niece and nephew received their First Communion

3. Pulled together mini-family party for husband's birthday

Small Successes: October 28th

1. Managed to get us all to Virginia and back ~ carseat not his favorite place (yet) but overall a good trip and really wonderful to introduce Liam to some of his aunts.

1. What book, movie or song has made you want to travel to a particular place? (eg. I went to Prince Edward Island because I was such a Anne of Green Gables fan)

Me Too!! Spent our honeymoon there.

2. Aside from your significant other, who would you want to take with you on a dream trip?

My sisters

3. Where would said dream trip be to?

Outer Banks, where we would miss our kids but also laugh and talk and drink.

4. If you were hosting guests or providing tips, what three things would you show visitors to your hometown? (be it where you live now or where you grew up)

a)Constitution Center b) Valley Forge c) Longwood Gardens (where it is currently dogwood season)

5. If you had a long weekend ahead of you, where you head – beach, city or country/mountains?

Beach, though I am long overdue for a trip to the mountains.

6. Do you have a passport? If so, did you get it for a particular trip or just to have, in case?

Yes, renewed in order to go to a cousin's wedding in Belgium

7. Are there any travel souvenirs you collect? If not, is there something else you collect?

Magnets

8. If you could name a paint colour, what colour would it be and what would you call it?

Redish~purple which I would call Gloaming

9. If you were heading away for a weekend citybreak solo, where would you go? (forget about practicality here and flight times, assume you can get to any city in the world for the weekend)

10. Is there a song or a smell or something that you strongly associate with a particular holiday/place/time, such that it always takes you back?

Quick Takes vol #21: Places I want to visit

1. Ireland: Even before I met my husband and heard the stories and saw the pictures of his visit I had wanted to see The Green Isle.  Someday we will travel there and ...
2. Belgium: Where I have been several times visiting family members but want to very much show my husband and children the sights and introduce them to members of my family (related and not) who have meant so much to me despite the distance.
3. Williamsburg, VA: For some reason despite living in VA since I was 9 I have never been.  I'm interested in history and came to be the designated tour guide of the family when any visitors wanted to go to nearby Mount Vernon or into Washington D.C.
4. Italy (especially Rome): My parents, and more recently my MIL have been and rave of the wonderful mix of vitality and reverence for history and heritage.
5. Cavendish Farm, PEI: While I have been to Prince Edward's Island on my honeymoon ( and loved it) we married in the winter and the farm was closed to visitors.   Anne of Green Gables remains a beloved favorite of mine and so to see where L.M. Montgomery grew up and the inspiration for those wonderful books is firmly on my to do list.
6. Kentucky: Within the U.S. there are four commonwealths, I have lived most of my life in three, coming home from hospital to live in Massachusetts, moving to Virginia when I was almost ten and living there until I left for college (my mom and sisters still live in VA) in Pennsylvania where I met and (years later) married my husband and which is where I currently live.  I figure I should at a minimum visit the fourth.
7. Great Barrier Reef, Australia: My husband introduced me to snorkeling a couple years ago and while I realize that there are many amazing spots in this hemisphere to snorkel if you are going to dream, dream big!
